  • Project Rwanda - positive feedback!

As we tie up the recent Project in Rwanda it was heartening to receive this feedback from David Chaplin of Rwanda Aid, who generously provided accommodation and much more for Nicky and Caroline while they were delivering the project:  "It was a pure pleasure having Nicky and Caroline as our guests, and they did some amazing work at the two centres.  I found watching them working with the children and staff a moving and inspiring experience."  We are now beginning to plan how best we can build on all that the project achieved and support the newly trained staff in the two care settings.

  • Volunteers from Rwanda return home!

We are delighted to report that Music Therapists, Nicky Haire and Caroline Anderson arrived home safely after delivering a skill sharing project to Local Partners in Rwanda. They spent 7 weeks working closely with staff at 2 care settings in the Cyangugu district to teach them how to use music therapeutically for the children in their care. If you want to find out more about their experiences, please visit their blog http://www.musicastherapy.org/news/blog.html.

Nicky and Caroline will debrief to the MasT International team and Project Leader on the 29th October. We can’t wait to find out more and share their success (& challenges!). They are currently writing a report for Sponsors, so please check the Rwanda section of the website mid November for updates.

  • Interactive Music-Making Course (Greenwich)

We are very excited to have launched our Interactive Music-Making Course, put together in partnership with Greenwich Community Health Services Music Therapy Service and accredited by Greenwich University, with our first teaching session last night.  We have ten students, all of whom work with children Under 5, who bring a huge range of experience to the course.  They will be attending weekly evening teaching sessions, until Christmas, and then putting their learning into practice running Interactive Music-Making groups themselves next year.

Getting this course off the ground is the culmination of 20 years' work by Sarah Hadley and fifteen years' work by Alexia.  Plus it sees the approach we developed in Romania, influencing practice back here in England.  A momentous moment indeed!

  • Romania: Training of Trainers Course

Just back from a fantastic trip to Romania! Feeling very inspired after spending 2 days with 30 enthusiastic Local Partners all looking to build on their skills as potential trainers. The course was led by UK Music Therapist, Cathy Rowland and co-led by 2 Local Partners from the Special School No 1 in Oradea, Monica Szabo and Maia Indrie. As well as it being a brilliantly productive couple of days, the icing on the cake was the recognition of all our Local Partner’s skills by the Local Education Authority who observed the 2 day training programme and awarded a certificate to each participant. So impressed were they by the standard of training and that of our Local Partners, they announced that they will be recommending the training to be accredited a national level! This a huge step forward for us, our Local Partners and for music therapy in Romania in general. Fingers crossed my next update is positive news....
