We are really pleased to share our contribution to the publication of Routledge’s “Music and Dementia: Perspectives on Research and Implementation”, a new volume bringing together global research, practice, and lived experience to explore how music can support people living with dementia. Edited by Becky Dowson and Justine Schneider, the book bridges scientific insight with real-world application, relevant to dementia caregivers, practitioners, and researchers.
Our contribution in Chapter 12, “Inspiring caregivers in India to embed music into the culture of caregiving through Music Helps’ accessible training”, co-written by Elsa Hariades, Alexia Quin, Nina Cherla, and Pavithra Gangadharan, celebrates the story and lasting impact of our Music Helps (India) online course.
In this chapter, we share insights into the co-development process and key cultural considerations involved in creating a suitable training tool for caregivers of Indian heritage. We also explore the training’s relevance, ongoing impact, and learnings with respect to the contributions music therapy-informed training can make to strengthen dementia care.
This work directly connects to the next phase of our Music Helps (India) programme, which is being relaunched on our new training platform in Spring 2026. Building on the impact of training over 400 caregivers, the updated course will offer improved accessibility, complete translations in English, Hindi, and Telugu, and stronger support for learners.
