Since February, students on the Distance Learning Programme have been working through the Theoretical Part of the course, which comprises monthly Online Tutorials and Written Assignments designed to build a solid theoretical foundation in Therapeutic Music Making.
The two-day face-to-face Intensive Study Training marks the transition from the Theoretical Part to the Practical Part of the course. Starting in October, each student will run 8 music sessions with a group of children with disabilities. These sessions are carefully planned to ensure students have all the resources they need for their Practical Part, and they will be supervised from a music therapy perspective.
“For me, this course came as an opportunity to reconnect with music and use it creatively in my sessions. I introduced certain techniques/activities into my therapeutic work with typical children in my office to facilitate the therapeutic relationship more easily and naturally.”

This year, the Intensive Study Training will be facilitated by Monika Manases, Course Moderator (also representing our partnership with the Sound Art E-motion Association), and Eleonora Roșca (representing our partnership with the CoMusica Association). Eli will be stepping into the role of Course Co-ordinator replacing Larisa Neculai, who is preparing to go on maternity leave.
Below, Larisa, Monika, and Eleonora have shared a few words ahead of the in-person weekend:
I’m confident that this year’s students, whom I’ve had the joy of getting to know from afar, will find the Intensive Study Training to be a fantastic opportunity for practical learning under Monika and Eleonora’s guidance. I look forward to hearing how the weekend helped address their questions or thoughts around the upcoming Practical Part

During this intensive study weekend, students will practice music therapy attitudes and strategies through microanalysis, role-playing, and embodied experiences, so after this weekend they can confidently begin welcoming children to practical sessions.

The IST weekend is the key moment in the Distance Learning course when we weave theory together with practice. It’s the time when we experience those ‘aha’ moments, moments of awareness, as we try to put ourselves in the shoes of the people we work with and explore how we can use the benefits of music more effectively to support and encourage interaction, self-expression, the development of communication skills, and more.

The Music as Therapy International team wishes this year’s participants and facilitators the very best for the 2026 Intensive Study Training in Romania!
