List of activities

A 6-week project, delivered in partnership with Hope and Homes and The Gallagher Trust, providing training to staff caring for children and young adults with disabiltieis at the Noel de Nyundo Orphanage and Ubumwe Community Centre in Gisenyi, near Rwanda’s border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This project had been deferred from 2013 as a result of local unrest.

Our Director, Alexia Quin, was invited to give one of the key note presentations at this year’s British Association for Music Therapy conference, held in Birmingham. Her paper was entitled “Embedding Innovation into the Counterpoint of Music Therapy Practice Today” and was subsequently published in the British Journal of Music Therapy.

We provided consultancy and financial support to an independent music therapist, Tsvia Horesh, enabling her to deliver an Introductory Training to Burmese teachers interested to develop skills to use music to help children with disabilities.

The 3rd delivery of our Interactive Music-Making structured training for early years practitioners in London. Accredited by the University of Greenwich and delivered in partnershp with Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, the course comprised a series of 12 weekly seminars, a practical assignment and a written assignment. The course was shortlisted for an Advancing Healthcare Award for the second time, in the category “Supporting the Future Workforce”.

We returned to visit our partners at Ngwino Nawe (since renamed The Alivera Centre) and Nkanka (since re-named Urugwiro Centre) to support their ongoing work with music, launch our training DVD and explore how they might be able to share their skills as trainers themselves.

We travelled extensively in Romania this year, returning to visit our partners from 1998 to the present in all corners of the country. Our visits took us to Bacau, Bistrita, Cighid, Cluj, Constanta, Oradea, Ploiesti, Sibiu, Targu Mures,Techirghiol,Timisoara and Vaslui where we had the opportunity to observe music sessions, evaluate current practice, provide guidance and support, and canvass local views on how we could develop the training and support we offer.

The 4th delivery of training delivered through our Distance Learning Model, this course comprised a series of 7 monthly tutorials and written assignments, participation in an Intensive Study Weekend – hosted by our partners from the Day Centre ‘Sf. Maria’ in Cluj – and a supervised Practical Assignment. The course can accommodate up to 12 practitioners interested to learn how they can use music within the care and/or edication they provide for young children with disabilities in different care settings around the country.

We returned to spend time with our partners at three schools run by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land in Ramallah, Bethlehem and Beit Sahour, to support their continued use of music following our introductory training the previous year.
